The importance of knowing the target audience of your film is so that you can use specific features which apply and are appropriate to the certificate the audience falls under.
My audience for my media film will be both genders. However we have narrowed down the age group between 15-18 year olds because we feel this age sector go to the cinema the most and are intrigued by horror and fear. Also they would go in big groups and this would generate a larger audience. We felt 21 would be the limit as many adults are no longer faised by the genre of the horror and film and would most likely not find it scary. Teenagers are attracted to the element of suspense and fear and the possible chance of blood. Although our film does not contain horror we feel the idea of a ghost attracks many audiences for example films like Dark water, The Grudge and what lies beneath. These all contain a ghost and acheived very highly and were very popular on release. We would hope to follow this pattern as all these films were certifcated a 15.
Dark water - How does this film represent the target audience, what would they like and how is that identified
This is a clip from Dark water certificated a 15 . We can clearly see the two main protagonists are both female. This is a typical generic convention in ghost horror films and female audience members will feel aligned with them. The social grouping of these two characters are both white females suggesting ghost horror films have a predominately female audience and therefore the use of female characters. The women is roughly estimated in her late 20's early 30's and is a single mother struggling in a new city, this applies to the target audience as girls can feel very vulnerable and alone. The little girl is between 5-8 years old and this is one of the key elements to a ghost sub genre because they are usually the ghost or connected to them in some way. Although our film will be certificated for a 15 the little girl is usually always in a ghost film and its what the audiences fear the most of they may have younger siblings or known girls that age. Both characters follow the stereotype for the sub genre which add to the suspense and fear, these make the audience feel once again aligned with the characters. I feel they would like this as although it is frightening they can relate to the characters they will connected with the story more and believe the horror film more than they would a gore film as they are targeted more for the male gender. This represents the audience as quite vulnerable people who want to see what happens to the characters and they can relate to them in some way or another.
To summaries my target audience would be certificated at a 15 and predominately aimed at women but we have also tried to appeal to men as we have broken the traditional generic convention and used a male character as the main protagonist.
